do maple/rosewood necks have more problems?

Sign in to disble this ad
it seems like a silly question i guess, but it seems like most necks i've experienced problems with have been maple with rosewood fingerboards. i've never had a maple neck with a maple board that had problems. is that just a coincidence or has anyone else noticed the same thing?

I don't think there is any inherent difference, but there might be if the neck is a one piece maple neck as opposed to a maple neck with a slab of rosewood glued to it. I suppose that could also apply to maple necks with glued on maple boards, too. I could see where that might lead to instability.

^warping, truss-rod maxxed out, stuff like that. i've had that sort of thing on about 3 different rosewood boards but never on a maple board. i've owned only about 30-40 or so basses (not a large sample i know) with about an equal number of each.

I think maple/rosewood is much more common among low end instruments. Not implying that yours were/are, but it's a thought.

AFAIK, 2-piece maple and maple/rosewood necks are actually supposed to be somewhat more stable than 1-piece maple necks.

mostly 60's/70's p and j basses with a smattering of peavey, washburn, ibanez, and lakland. all problems were w/ the jazz's, including my current JO5 skyline.

The problems your describing arent related to the woods used but rather the mfg not being that good. Owned dozens of maple necks with rosewood fretboards and only had two that had truss rod problems. One a carvin, they have a history of weak necks. The 2nd a bc rich which was early run from china. That batch of instrument had problems overall with many flubs compared to same time frame korean made bc richs.

^i really thought it was a coincidence but figured if it wasn't others here would've observed the same.
