I liken it to that growly sound a saxophone makes when they over-blow the notes.

Getting a little technical here... I've had a few people tell me about the plucking pattern with the string. Pluck 'across' the strings for a rounder, fuller tone. Pluck 'vertical' for more clack and bite (like the classic Telecaster guitar sound). It just depends on what timbre you're trying to create.

I like it _sometimes_. Not enough to where I'd set up any basses that way though. When I think of Stingrays I think of a lot of people who buzz (Flea comes to mind right away). I even think John Myung purposely set up a bass in the studio to buzz on the song Octavarium at about 8:45 into the song, though it could just be the overdrive he's using there (sounds like purposeful fret buzz combined with overdrive though)

Yes, a musical fretbuzz makes the bass sound better imo.

It's very percussive... I don't mind it, especially on the low B and E. I don't have much relief in the neck and like my bass set up in this way. It's little enough buzz that it can be controlled with some dynamic playing. Why not add the dimension of buzz? B)

John Myung likes his action low in the studio. He also has a really strong right hand attack. He definitely seems to welcome the fret clank and buzz when he plays. Plus he does like some OD.

I find that just the tiniest of tiny amounts of fret buzz can give you a pretty cool tone. It's actually why a lot of my basses tend to be unplayable for a lot of other guys. I play with a really light touch, and if you dig in too much on one of my basses you're going to get a LOT of buzz. I typically set my basses up so that if I dig in just a hair I can get some nice growl and snarl.

My basses tend to be unplayable for bassists for the exact opposite reason.

Ha! I actually had a StingRay with stupid high action for a long time because I thought it sounded better that way. I know how it can go

Hmm. None of the B's clank on any of my 5's...Then again, I'm a fingers only guy, no pick ever (I just can't pkay with them).

I like low action and detest fret buzz. Needless to say, having a bass that will take that kind of set up eliminates a lot of cheapy basses for me. Fret buzz and slap: My 2 absolute least favorite sounds in the music world...

I've got mine setup such that I'll get a little buzz if I dig in hard, but is otherwise clean. I like the added "growl" in loud parts.

Sometimes I like it very much. Depends on the sound I want. I like to set up my bass so that it is fairly clean with my regular playing, but gets some buzz and growl when I dig in more, or use a pick.

On my P with flats, I don't like buzz very much. On my Schecter with rounds, I love a little bit of buzz when I dig in. Makes for a great sound that is really aggressive.

And I too have basses that nobody else can play haha. Light strings with low action because I play really lightly. The only reason that the guy I'm lending a bass to can play it without absurd buzzing is because he learned how to play on it.

I've actually had more complaints from band mates for not having enough "clank". To each his own though.....for the situation.

Yes I do. Just the right amount of buzz and clank!

I like it, but the rest of my band doesn't.

Time for a solo career!

No. I will not tolerate it on any of my instruments. No buzz, no clank, no hiss, no hum.
