I used to loathe fret buzz but now I've grown to love it in the right amounts.

I don't know if my bass would be unplayable by anyone else, but maybe uncomfortable. I use heavy gauge strings and a medium action. Not too high or low.

Like someone else said, some buzz, when it's intentional, can be great. If a bass buzzes and clanks excessively, due to a poor setup, not so good.

This is an interesting thread considering I just had a similar discussion with a friend whose bass I helped adjust. What I don't like is when there is a low spot or single fret that buzzes when the rest of the neck doesn't. That is very irritating. But set up is a really personal thing. Here is a summary of the discussion I had with my friend.

"It buzzes!" he said after playing a loud, un-muted note on the third fret of the E string. I said, "Is that how hard you play music on it? You can make anything buzz if you play it hard enough." So I picked up his other bass and made it buzz too. Then we adjusted the action to match his playing style rather than mine. I typically dampen the strings or stop the note short if I play hard in order to get punch and not boom. So I play hard, but it is controlled.

Could depend on the flats. The fenders I have are pretty bright on my Fender bass. If I play easy you get a roundish tone. if I dig in fret buzz. I love that bass. It really all depends on how I hit the strings and what I am doing.

To me, fret buzz is 100% unacceptable. However, fret clank is aurally orgasmic.

I don't mind a little when I dig in, but I don't want any with a moderate touch. My action is usually medium to medium low.

Hell yeah, some buzz and clack. It makes it sound like you're stomping the hell out of your bass. I love that grit and growl even when playing blues and jazz. There is just something so aggressive about that dimension of tone you get from a little buzz. I think its a great tool and its definitely a strong aspect of my tone and style.
