you could just keep the old neck handy for when you want to sell it, and then swap em out. honestly i think you lose money on any modifications you make, youll never be able to get all of it or a reasonable amount back.

I would say any changes from stock would definitely devalue a "vintage" instrument... but on a chopshop eBay bass... shouldn't matter so much.

yep the above is true, go for it. you can always get a fender neck off the bay as well.

As someone who has owned, serviced, repaired, and sold both stock Fender basses and ones with licensed replacement necks, I can offer the following:

If the bass is a MIM version, a replacement neck won't make much of a dent in the already low resale value.

If the bass is a MIA version, a replacement neck will make a significant dent in resale value.

Also, please note that "licensed" replacement necks sold on Ebay are often lacking in a few areas:

1. Many have only the satin base coat and need additional finishing
2. Frets are often only roughly levelled. A pro fret dressing is often helpful or even necessary
3. There are no decals on the headstock, which a lot of people seem to care about

I'm very wary buying stock Fender necks off ebay, because Fender's QC mostly sucks and you can bet good money any MIA, MIJ, or MIM neck on ebay is being sold for warp, twist, or rising tongue.

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is have a neck made on order with USA Custom Guitars or Warmoth. Your out-of-pocket when all is said and done will be about the same, as will the time required. If they're good enough for Sadowsky and Lull, they should be good enough for the rest of us mortals, right?

The only reason I can think of to buy a MM or AllParts neck off Ebay is that you don't care about low action and are content to pay half price for a neck that is half-finished.
