Does my bass need a set up?

YouTube - ‪Fender Standard Precision Bass MIM sound review (pick, fingers and slap)‬‏ (sorry 'bout the quality, and sorry for my poor, sloppy playing :P)

A local guitar tech charges £30 to have a set up done. Is it worth getting my bass set up or does it sound ok?

We can't tell if a bass needs a setup by how it sounds on a low quality youtube video...

Setup is about feel, intonation, action, frets, some other things AND sound.

The question is an abstraction since a setup has a great deal to do with YOUR personal enjoyment of the instrument you are playing.

One would reverse that and ask YOU; "does your Bass need a setup? Is the action too high (or low...) for your taste and playing style?" Do you believe that the strings touch other frets upon which they should not? Is your intonation accurate enough to maintain correct harmonics?

Like most elements in music, this is an extremely subjective issue and which makes YOU feel comfortable is what is important. And, indeed, that may change over the years. Even Brass instruments may be altered to achieve different sensitivities and a "feel" that is unique.

As we live longer and grow in various areas we learn things for ourselves, we learn to empathize and see things through other's eyes, yet we most be true to ourselves in the end. And that self honestly and self appraisal is often a key to being content.

I also agree that uTube is not the best method to judge many sounds. What's more is that a subjective judgement is more often than not being made on playing technique, style, personal taste, and appraisal of anther's skill set. That's just too subjective an issue to formulate an opinion for another person. Play and be rewarded. Learn more and be enriched.

Pickup setup affects tone. Action affects tone in a smaller way with one exception. That being musical fret rattle or lack thereof (no fret buzz). I prefer the sound add of musical fretbuzz.

Except for the comment about action and fret buzz sound, action for truss rod and bridge saddle heights is about easiest playability and expressiveness.

So the real question is: What changes to the playability would you make for better playability to you? Would lower or higher strings (low to fretboard, or farther from) as far as your fretting nuances go? And do you prefer crunchy/growly tone or smooth no musical fret buzz tone?

Is it comfortable to play? Then no, probably not.

Isn't this kind of like asking, "Do you think I have a drinking problem?" If you have to ask the question...
