Lightbulb Double Thumb-Simple, cheap solution if your strings are too far from bass top.

My son found double thumping difficult on his Fodera Monarch, because there was too much distance between the string and the body (the top) of the bass.

So I got a sheet of clear pick guard plastic (the stuff that is sticky on one side) and cut a shape to fit just around where the thumb contacts on the bass....I then made a little "pick guard" by sticking 9 layers together for the correct thickness. This completely worked as far as ease of double thumping goes.

This is the result---check out the double thumbing right at the very end of the recording!!! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsfrnbfbAoE

You can see the "pick-guard" in this vid if you look closely- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnkZmOqTC-s

I don't really get how a pickguard can help with double slap since the problem your son have is the strings height.

But it is a nice idea to not scrach the finish with slap technic ( like the Victor Wooten's Fodera )

I would guess the thickness to be about 4 mm, hard to believe it makes a big difference, but it does. We experimented with thicknesses before sticking it on.

Jasper has the action about as low as it can practically go....the thumb 'bounces' off the body of the bass, so by making the body sort of closer to the strings you get the comfortable distance for the 'bounce'.

My Pedulla doesn't have this problem the distance is just right already.

Cheers guys.
