Not as a repair, but as more of an upgrade...

I further drill them out to fit a given size (whatever you can get) oak dowel and glue that in. Saw/sand back flush and re-drill to fit threaded inserts. Then use machine screws instead of wood screws.

I reckon you were wanting something easier than that?

Just plug them with the dowel and re-drill to the correct size.

Yup - Dowel it. Threaded inserts *are* the very cool way to do it, but if you're talking about a beater bass, then I'd just drill/fill and re-drill for wood screws.

Good luck!

its a build im doing. i found a good deal on a jazz neck and that is one of the issues on it. i wanted to be prepared before getting it. i figured that would be the best thing anyway.

Speaking of threaded inserts, do any of you feel they can help reduce dead spots, like the ones sometimes found on the 7th-8th frets of the G string?

Gord Oh, the EASIEST "fix" is to move up to the larger screws that fit the existing threads.

The next "easiest" fix is to glue in plugs and redrill.

the next being threaded inserts...

Its worth going "all the way" with the threaded inserts.

I had a similar problem on a bass of mine and used threaded inserts from this company:
http://www.insertsdirect.com/product...f-6608dc80b4b6
those are the inserts i used. although you'd have to buy them in bulk when i did it about a year ago they would send individual ones as free samples so i sent an email asking for 4 for my guitar and they sent them worked a treat just screw them in and widen the body's holes to fit the bolts, tighten and you're sorted hope that helps.

Yep, especially since you're doing your own build. And it's going to be easier than just about anything other than using bigger screws.

You can get an extremely tight fit, where woodscrews would've stripped out--as you're well aware. I've always noted a more thru-body tone, when I've done this. You CAN strip the inserts, esp. if they're brass, so don't play gorilla...
