Drop C Tuning on a 5 String?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing in a band that tunes drop c (CGCFAD) and I need to tune my bass as such. I'm playing a 5 string so I have options. I was thinking of tuning CGCFA however I know tuning up is really bad for my neck. However, if I have a tech set it up and adjust it for that tuning would I be ok? Also, I was told I could also tune it CCGCF. Tuning up on the B but down on the rest.I prefer CGCFA but I don't wanna damage my bass.

So what's my best option? Thanks in advabce for the help

I'm in a similar tuning situation, I tuned ACGCF though, so my "B" string is tuned lower than the guitarists can even reach..let's you drop those noticeable bass bombs in fills/jams/solos but still be able to riff along with the guitars. in standard tuning It's like having BEADG when the guitars lowest is still just E

Drop C on a 5 string, 34" scale bass just requires the right strings and a professional setup for correct intonation and action.

I recommend:

C - .120
G - .90
C - .70
F - .50
C - .35

Bear in mind that if you dont get your instrument's intonation properly set-up for this tuning it will neither play in tune at higher registers nor feel very comfortable!
