Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

Does anyone make a replacement tuner for MIM P and J basses that fits in the stock holes?

Thanks,
Phil

unlike the standard Ultralight with a 3/8" post, these have a 1/2" post this is a true drop-in for your stock Fender

http://www.hipshotproducts.com/cart....t_detail&p=111

I have used these on several basses with great results. If you go this route, I'd also recommend a matching de-tuner

http://www.hipshotproducts.com/cart....ct_detail&p=84

note that both of these tuners will require you to drill a 1/16" dia x 3/8" deep hole (easily seen in the first image) on the back of your headstock to secure the rotation angle of the tuner. Should you ever decide to return to the stock tuners, this hole is completely covered by the stock tuner key

all the best,

R

Schaller BMFL (but also BML) were perfect for my MIM jazz neck.

What are those acronyms? Do you know if J and P necks have the same size tuner holes?

Do any of these tuners fit the stock screw holes?? I know for a fact the BMLs don't fit at all.

Stew Mac has this info for the tuners they carry:

Gotoh 9/16" hole
Hipshot Ultralites 9/16" hole
Schaller 11/16" hole
Stew Mac No Name 23/32" hole

The frustrating thing is none of the specs match people's comments. There have been multiple comments in other threads leading one to believe the hole is 1/2", but None of the holes specified at Stew Mac is a 1/2 inch.

I put a post in my 2006 MIM Mods thread to see if we can get an absolute, definitive answer.

BML's, according to the Warmoth site, need a 17.5 mm hole.
Which is .68 inches, which is consistent with Stew Mac's spec for another Schaller tuner. So, yeah, it sure sounds like the BML's are not drop-in replacements.

Standard MIM Fender headstock hole is 11/16".

The Hipshot 1/2" post Ultralites fit as well as Schaller BML's but neither match up to the standard MIM screw holes.

Hipshot claims thier HB-1 will fit the MIM Fenders but I have not actually tried them to verify. They look close though.

http://www.hipshotproducts.com/cart....ct_detail&p=93

I don't have any HB-1's in stock at the moment but will be ordering some tomorrow. I can verify with Jason at Hipshot if they are indeed a true MIM replacement.

Guys?

I'm talking about the mounting screw holes. It's easy enough to find tuners that fit the 11/16 peghead holes. But what about the mounting screws: I haven't seen any tuners that match the factory pattern!

A couple of people did understand and mentioned the Hipshot HB-1 tuners. I read somewhere else that Hipshot said these wouldn't fit. Can anyone confirm?

To emphasize: It's the mounting screw hole pattern that I want to match.

I talked with Hipshot today and they claim the HB1 is a drop in replacement. I'm still slightly skeptical but when I get my shipment in I'll verify for sure ...

I just realized that both quotes are from sbassman and I didn't mean to pick on him. Just felt everyone was getting the wrong idea. I should read more and talk less.

I've NEVER seen a drop in replacement for a MIM Tuner.
