dry/rough fingerboard care? help

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a new fender jaguar bass and I love everything about it, only thing is I noticed the fingerboard is a lot "dryer" or rougher than other basses I've had (MIM fenders mostly). there seems to be a lot more black rough spots on the neck than normal and I was wondering what I should do or what proper fingerboard care is. the bass is brand new so I'd be hard pressed to say its from the strings or something.

isn't there some sort of coating or something you can do to the fingerboard to moisturize it/take care of it? something I can pick up from the local guitar shop? or is this just completely normal? also this bass has inlays so i'm not sure how that would go over with those... thanks for any help in advance!

Lemon oil and 0000 steel wool. Put masking tape over the pickups first...

I'm sorry, but I'm not satisfied with that answer. All I've ever seen is warnings against lemon oil, mineral oil and the like. My fingerboard (particularly around the 1st-6th frets) is extremely dry and porous, I really want to remedy this the proper way. Maybe some roche thomas fingerboard oil? can anyone give any up to date good researched information on this?

I use lemon oil on my 1965 P bass and my Smith's. I have used it on my Pbass since I got it in Aug of 83... no issues
