Unhappy Dull sound on string

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi I have just started learning. My E string is now given a dull thumping sound. All the other strings are ok. I have tried new strings and still get this thumping sound.
Any suggestions?

What kind of bass?

If you've tried new strings and get the same effect, what happened in correlation with this new sound effect?

Are your pickups set to proper distance from the strings?

What do your saddles look like, are they clean?

What about the nut at the end of the neck, is the string staying above the fretboard?

Did you look at the wiring in the cavity to determine if anything broke?

Need lots more detail to help....

Thumbs up dull sound

Thanks for the reply.
The bass is a wesley with 2 pick ups
The new strings improved it slightly.
As for the correct height of the pick ups and looking inside the bass, I Have not got a clue were to start and would probaly be doing more damage.
How should i clean the saddles?

So, out of the 14 they list on their website, which one is yours?

Sometimes, a string can get a flat spot if you're using roundwounds. This usally occurs with age or really hard playing, lots of bending, etc.

If you have new strings and it improved things slightly, maybe it's just a simple setup you need done at a local shop if you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself.

I don't have the links anymore, but there are plenty of references to proper setup techniques in this forum that guided me in my 1st run, it's not that hard and you good feel of accomplishment doing it and you don't have the bill at the end of the job.

There are websites that are dedicated to setup stickied at the top of the forum. They are not going to help you identify your problem. The term "set up" and the term "diagnostics" are two different things altogether.

A methodical, common sense approach will determine most problems. most problems only have a very few possible causes. In your case, the most likely cause of your problem is that the pup is too close to the E string. Just press the pup deeper into the pup cavity and hold it there while you check to see if the prob clears up. If it does, the pups are adjustable and we'll take it from there.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. We all started somewhere.
