I just gave my Fender Jazz a much needed setup, and a new set of Rotosound rounds. But the G string sounds dull and muffled. The other strings are fine, with that signature Rotosound bright twang. But the G seems dull wherever I fret it. Fret buzz doesn't seem to be an issue, neither does pickup height.
Help? |

This seems to happen a lot with rotosound. It's the only brand i ever bought that did that. |

It actually might be a buzz issue. When I do a quick hammer on/pull off combo on the G string, it seems difficult to do, and vibrates a lot more than usual. |

| | | | I've heard jazzes are known for having dead spots on the G string around the 5-9th fret
maybe try a fat finger?

It's really pissing me off. I'll look into the fat finger... though I'm a poor ass student, I can barely afford to eat lol. eBay here I come. |

Help? | I've played for more years than I want admit...went through my Chris Squire stage with a couple of Ricks and Rotosounds...even tried them later on other basses....Every single pack of strings had at least one "thudder" in it out of the package...after a half dozen sets, can't trust them to ever buy them again.

It is not a nut slot problem, since it would only affect open strings. It is not a setup issue, because you say the string sound dead across the board so unless you set your action so low that your string is resting on the frets it is a non-issue.
A fat finger is for fixing a deadspot on the neck, usually around the 7th fret of the g-string. It is clearly not your problem so please do the right thing.
You just need to go to the place where you bought the string or e-mail them if you bought online and they will replace it for free.
As I said and as another tber said rotosound strings don't have a very good quality control. I used to only use those strings but after getting a dud string on every package out of five or so, I changed brand. |

First, undo the string from the peg, lift out the ravelled part and see if the string "flips over length ways". If it doesn't do this then you got a dud string. |

The first was a set of DR Lo-Riders, the second were SIT Power Steels. Never happened before and I find it unlikely that it's 2 dead strings, is there anything else it could be? It's just as the OP described it, muffled, even open.
I did a search and figured I would piggy back this thread instead of starting a new one, sorry for the hijack.
