Dumb Trussrod Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Do you turn the trussrod counter clockwise on ALL basses in order to add more curve to the neck? The reason I ask is that on my Fender Bass you turn the allen screw clockwise to tighten (straighten the neck) and counterclockwise to loosen (add curve) to the neck. I have an older Westone bass and the neck is flat and straight as a board. I need to add some relief or curve to the neck but when I turn the allen bolt counterclockwise it is completely loose. Wondered if the clockwise/counterclockwise thing applied to all basses or do I have a trussrod problem. Thanks!

All I can say is loosen it (counterclockwise) all the way. Tune your bass 1/2 step up and let it sit overnight. Next day check your adjusting nut and see if its still loose. If it snugged up loosen it again and let it sit again. This might put a little relief in the neck.

Not all bass's trussrods work the same way. The easiest way to figure out which way the trussrod work is to use a tuner. Hook up the tuner and tune the bass perfectly. Turn the trussrod 1/8 to 1/4 turn, either direction is fine. If the notes get sharp than the neck has straightened. If the notes get flat than the neck has curved.

Notate your findings and keep the paper in your case or gig bag.

I will give it a try - I figured they might all be the same. Thanks!
