Dunlop recessed straplock mod

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got a bass that has Dunlop recessed straplocks. I actually am not crazy about straplocks (yeah, I know...religious topic) but have been using them on the last Fender I got that came with Schallers installed.

While I had a strap that I could dedicate to the new bass with the Dunlops installed, I was wondering if anyone made an insert for the recessed straplocks that mimicked a regular strap button. I've done some searching but haven't turned anything up. Alternatively I'm wondering if you can get a longer Dunlop button assembly. One thing I like about the Schaller setup is that it effectively extends the upper horn.

Wooden dowell, glue, sand paper, drill. If you do it right, the new strap loc will sit right on top of the wooden dowell and you'll never see it.

Be sure to drill the hole for the new screw exactly in the center of the dowell. Also be carefull not to sand off the finish around the dowell. You can use some polishing compound to get out the sand marks if you are careful. You can also cut the dowell a bit short making the strap lock a bit recessed but not all the way recessed. This would save on the sanding and polishing.

Good luck.
