E string intonation issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

My Fender J bass is experiencing an usual intonation problem on the E string. The problem being that the pitch audibly moves before settling. It is most apparent at the 5th and 3rd fret but even the open E has this problem. I have restrung and adjusted the intonation but the problem still remains.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Any help is much appreciated.

If I'm understanding you correctly, this is normal behavior for any plucked stringed instrument. If you doubt me, check it with a tuner (unless your analysis was already performed with a tuner).

That is why people say you should either tune to the attack or the decay of a note, because the note varies in pitch.

Let me know what you think and what you find out on your own about this. I think I am correct, though.

Thanks for the reply Lou,

What you say sounds correct from what I've observed and been told by others. It just seems that there is an unusual amount of pitch variance with the E string. It's not a huge issue and for the most part is unnoticeable but having recently picked up double bass I'm finding my ear is becoming increasingly aware of any intonation discrepancies.
