E string sound issues

Sign in to disble this ad
I have tried to search on this and found only threads that also describe my problem, but no real solutions. My E string sounds for lack of a better description "hollow". Does not have the alive sound of the others.
This bass is a Fender Jazz style (has a fender jazz neck)
This has the same sound regardless of strings - have gone from flats to rounds and from 40-100 to 50-105 gauges.

I have also tried raising and lowering the pups (nordstrand big splits)
No buzzes anywhere - though I do need to do a full setup due to weather issues it was still this way when properly set.
I notice it much less in loud band setting, but stands out much more in private practice levels.
Any ideas?

It sounds to me like the string is twisted. I had the same problem on my Jazz Bass with the D string. I took the string off and repositioned it and it took care of the problem.

Make sure it's sitting in the nut, bridge and tuner properly. Since the string makes a physical connection through the tuner, nut and bridge, you might want to change out those items. Sounds like you've tried everything else. If it sounds the same way with different strings, it's most likely one of those things.

If none of those changes solve the problem then it might be a physical defect in the neck or body. Possibly that string is not ringing true due to a different density in the wood somewhere on the body or neck.

Maybe removing the strings and reducing the truss tension on then neck for a few days and then resetting the truss and restringing the bass might help.

+1 on the string position. I had a similar problem and it turned out that there were too many wrappings on the tuner and the string wasn't sitting right. I shortened the string a bit and rewrapped it. No more problem.

IME/IMO/YMMV,etc.
