E string trouble

My apologies if this is not the right place for this post as this is my first time posting. I've had a bass that I bought from craigslist.org for a little over a year. I just bought a practice amp for it and yet the E string will not pick up over the amp. Any suggests that anyone would have would be appreciated.

Posting what equipment you have (along with pictures, as well) would allow us to better assess the problem and assist you.

If it's a Precision-type, with the single/split pickup, if the upper (nearer your face) coil is damaged, the D & G strings work fine, and there's also a decent signal from the A string (picked up by the working coil, although there should be some attenuation), but the E will be almost dead.

I've worked on two basses recently where this was the case. In both cases we sent the pickups for the damaged coil to be rewound, and this cured it.
