Would a guitar E string work? Or will it not even reach the headstock?

Based on my experience, around .020", which is probably the smallest wound string you can get.

the smallest I've ever seen is a .30, at first i thought a bari guitar string but I'm not sure, I've also heard of treble bass (a contradiction in itself) strings

A low E is way too thick (0.045 maybe?), a high E is too thin (about 0.009 I think). Keep in mind there's lots of different guitar string gauges so those are estimates.

If you must use a guitar string, it should be a G (I use a guitar D string for my C on my bass).
