Eb tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys n gals, I just recently decided to experiment with Eb tuning (half step down on all strings). I adjusted the saddles accordingly to correct any intonation issues. My Ab, Db, and Gb strings sound fine but my Eb is a bit floppy, or at least sounds like it. Should I replace the strings before trying a new tuning, or is there something else I should adjust? And out of curiosity, how many of you play in this tuning? How do your strings feel?
Thanks.

Eb tuning

Hi!

My band is in Eb as well, because of the singer.
I'm not quite happy with this, because my bass sounds a little better in normal tuning IMO, and it feels better to play with the stiffer strings.
Not a big issue, but I'm still in search for a string set which is as stiff tuned to Eb as others tuned to E.
I found Daddarios (always used .045s) toooo loose, Ernie Balls (.045, too)are much better for this, and FOR ME. 55/110 set was too thick, but I like .110 E for this tuning. Next time I'll give a chance to Rotosound. would love to get 50/110 here, but couldn't.

I'm interested in this topic too - so please give us tips on string sets suitable for downtuning!
not that half step down meant THAT much... but I like my bass at normal tuning better, so why not searching the strings to achieve that in lower tuning?

ZolkoW: hmm.. what kind of d'addarios were you using? i use the regular guage (.45-.105) in a band i'm sessioning for right now and we tune D, Ab, Db, Gb,. and well, the E seemed a tad bit floppy at first so i just put a little more relief in the neck. it's working pretty fine now. i can slap the D (E) string and it sounds punchy. i'm using a stingray if that matters. but heavier guaged strings will definitely help.

Hey thanks guys. I'll try .105 strings and see what happens. I'm really excited about this tuning, I like having the Ab being an open string because I don't like the way E-strings sound past 4th fret (Ab) on P-basses (thumpy and weird, maybe needs a pro setup but I like the way my bass is setup now) and I don't have the heart to replace my baby.

Yeah, relief and/or some bridge adjustment helps, but I still don't like the feel. They were 45/105 nickels..
I have them on fretless, Eb tuning as well, and it's okay, but don't think to buy again. (I think I play much softer on fretless.. or just not the same way)

I'm looking forward to get my 5-string (ooops...it's me, so I just have to build it before... ), as I can play it in normal tuning, having that low Eb
