El Cheapo project question

I have an old Hondo II P-copy that had a badly warped neck. I pulled the neck off and made a fireplace poker out of it.

I now play a slim, pleasantly nasal Ibanez SR800 that I like just fine, but I still have this big baboonass-purple bass body with a DiMarzio split-P that is giving off some fond memories (or fantasies, it must be admitted). I'm thinking of trying to resurrect it.

Even if the neck had been good, the Precision shape was a bit large for me, so I'm eyeing this cheap no name Jazz style neck on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=270095797509

If it weren't for the tempting notion of getting a Jazz neck on a P, I would just buy an SX, and be done with it, but the idea is sort of stuck in my head now.

Is there any chance that this cheap neck will be any better than the original cudgel that was on the Hondo II? Has anybody ever tried one of the "samsguitarshop" necks?

Is there any chance that I'll be able to fit it onto the Hondo II body? I'm no luthier, but I do a bit of woodworking. The Hondo seems to be a shameless copy of a Fender Precision (with the truss rod adjustment at the butt end), so maybe?

Should I just shut up and go practice?

You can fit it - one way or another. My only concern is that the cost is going to be more than half of what you could get a Squier Affinity or an SX for brand new - the whole thing.
I'm not trying to discourage you , but if it were I, I'd look for a cheaper neck.
If you need woodworking help, lemme know.
Cheers!

Hmm. Cheaper. Sounds good. Any suggestions?

That's about the same price as an SX neck. If someone says it's a decent neck why not?

That's the problem. Nobody has ever said it's a decent neck. I've bought cheap stuff off of Ebay before, and it's gone both ways.

Maybe I should ask my wife what I should do. No, wait...

Yeah, hopefully someone on here has some experience with them and can let you know.

I just bought an SX block inlay neck and, while a little sloppy from close up is a very nice playing neck. I'm sure I'm not the only guy on this board with a spare SX neck sitting around, either.

I think a P bass with a jazz neck is a dandy idea, and it's one I'm looking into now.

Yeah, this is kinda what I was thinking - there should be an SX neck or two, and maybe for less than $50 plus shipping.

Of course, the non-inlay SX neck is almost exactly 50 with shipping direct from Rondo. The block neck is about $75 with shipping. Neither is a bad deal. I don't know if the cheaper neck is finished, though.

Yeah, I checked that out. Unfortunately, the cheaper neck is a P

The block inlay neck looks good, and 75 bucks is still cheap.

BTW, I noticed that someone bought that neck. Was it you?

I did not do that thing. I decided to just shut up and go practice for the time being.

Ain't no need to rush. You'll almost certainly find what you are looking for at some point.
