Essex Volume Knob acts like Tone???

Sign in to disble this ad
Just picked up an Essex (sx) P bass and found that the VOlume knob does not turn the volume down, but only acts as a "mud knob," affecting mostly the tone.

Any ideas about what the deal is? I pm'd the orig owner and he said that no one has been into the works, and did not know there was a problem.

I'll try some Deoxit, but was wondering if anyone has seen something like this. Thanks.

The volume control has 1 leg that goes to a common ground point. That ground is not making a connection. Fix the ground and that should fix your prob.

The tone knob rolls off the treble... not very musically, though, it sounds like an inexpensive tone knob. I play wide open in general, so not a real problem.

And no, I'm not getting the two confused! As a matter of fact I just fixed an Ibanez (1984 pointy one) and its knobs went: middle detented blend/vol/tone, right in a line. Odd, but I kind of liked it!

Pkr2, that sounds like the kind of thing that it would be. I'll look for the break in the grounding. Cheers.
