Estimate on installing a new pickup.

Hey I'm considering buying a Mark Hoppus Signature Bass (I know..) I like the P pickups with the J body and the different pickguard... not to mention the vintage colors. However I intend to make a lot of modifications to it.

First and foremost I would like to install a bridge position J pickup and volume knob. This would require cutting into the wood to make a spot for the J-pup, doing the routing and then of course putting the electronics/pup in.

I've never had major bass work done before, but I'm sure prices vary widely.

I'm just looking for a ballpark here.... how much would it cost to have that work done? That is not including the cost of the new pickup and electronics themselves.

And in case you're interested, other mods would include a new neck and a new bridge.

You're kidding, right? Why don't you just save a little extra dough and buy something a little closer to your desired dream bass? I'm sure you can find a quality stock P/J bass for a lot cheaper than what your modifications would run. You might not have a wide choice of pastel colors but that's a minor trade-off IMO. As for your plan of action above...don't waste your time and/or money.

I agree. Those alterations will be expensive. I would look around for a more ideal bass.

Just my thoughts, though.
