Evil Irishman dismantled my bass!!! That said, I need in a big way.
I am not a complete idiot when it comes to electronics - I do own a soldering iron.
I have tried to look through forums and how to's
- but am fairly overwhelmed by not knowing where to begin.
I am bit vexed as to what bits go where, and honestly which bits are what,
and even if there are any bits of bits incomplete/missing/broken etc.....
Okay, apparently I am a complete idiot that owns a soldering iron.
The best I can do is upload the pictures of the bits of my battered bass and hope that someone can give me any info on where to start, or what I'm missing
(I suspect it was sabotaged for parts)
I just realized that I could only upload two photos here so have put them up on webshots.
In case that didn't work, I will try embedding link http://entertainment.webshots.com/al...=entertainment
I know I'm requesting huge amounts of info, but I would be eternally grateful to anyone that can spare a couple minutes to point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
KC |

And drop that silly formatting! Try making it easier to read, rather than harder...

| | | | Thanks 2 Pkr2 Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with the wiring diagram, I'm still not sure where the magnet goes, but at least I'm not TOTALLY clueless.
As to previous formatting, I was actually attempting to make it easier, not more difficult to read.
In regards to "evil Irishman" that is just what he has come to be known among most of my friends and others that mistakenly trusted him enough for him to cause havoc in their lives. No insult to "non-evil" irishmen intended.

KC | You're welcome.
From one of the pups? Compare the two pups side by side and it should be obvious.
It really shouldn't matter. You will need new pups anyway.
Why in the world did you let him work on your bass if most of your friends were so dissatisfied with him that they gave him the nick name???????

| Well, the short answer to that would be that I am a gullible ass. OFF-TOPIC EXPLANATION OF HOW I GOT IN THIS MESS The 'long story short' version is that when the chick he was living with moved back east, he asked if he could store some of his stuff in my spare room. Before I realized it he was storing himself in my spare room. At the time I was working a lot (in the mundane world) trying to catch up on bills that had accrued the last time I had spent a couple months just working on music. So I wasn't home a great deal.About four years ago he had made me an awesome instrument (mandolin strings on a bass body so I could get a guitar sound without having to learn guitar) so I felt bad just tossing him out on the street. About two months later when I came out of work zombie mode. It dawned on me that about half my tools (inherited from my dad) were missing. When I went into the spare room which I had been avoiding-like an ostrich with head in sand-I found it completely trashed. Apparently he had been tweaked out and trying to build basses. It took me a week and several large male acquaintences to get him out. I had no idea that he had dismantled my bass until I opened my gig bag and found it in it's current condition. Prior to the evil irishman, it was in perfect condition, and I was extremely fond of it.
Well-I tried to keep that as brief as possible, but that explanation was still longer than I wanted it to be- But therein lies the ballad of how my bass became badly battered bits.
It actually has been in my closet for the past 3 months because I was too depressed to deal with it when I first discoverered it. It also wasn't until after I had thrown him out that I found out that hed screwed over several other people and basically at that point I was the only one left speaking to him. BACK TO TOPIC
I have about 3 or 4 of his non-working half-finished bass creations, but they do seem to have pick ups that look okay (better than mine anyway!)and other bits and bobs that seem functional. I was hoping I could replace the parts on my bass with some of them. I would love to just take it to a proffesional and have everything fixed with new and shiny parts, but I just got myself out of debt and would REALLY like to have a couple of months of music before I have to go back to overtime. Right now my budget has a budget, and I just can't afford it.
I KNOW I can fix this thing with stuff I have, but so far the knowledge has refused to come to me in a dream.
This is a link to the pic of the magnet bit that has me baffeled. http://entertainment.webshots.com/ph...00602836PyNQKp
It was broken in half and I glued it back together. I have looked at my other instruments, but as far as I can tell non of them have anything similar.
Thanks for listening to my rant and for all your help.

KC | For the moment, forget the broken magnet.
Do you have a set of pups that look like they'll fit your bass in one of the basses he left? Do you have a soldering iron and solder? Do you know how to solder?
Let's take it just one step at a time for the moment.

| I am attaching the pics of the two pickups I managed to take off. They seem to be encased in...well.. ummm a "casing" of sorts (I feel ridiculously stupid- please try and bear through my complete lack of technical terminology) I can probably pry the casing open. (He seems to have glued it shut) but wasn't sure if it was necessary. The casing doesn't fit the faceplate(?) but that could be easily modified. Quote: |

| Yes, an electric one, a battery operated one and a butane one. Am on slightly firmer ground here. I do know how to solder, and I have a knack for being able to fix things, but my knowledge thus far has been limited to fixing very obvious "oh look- that wire there has come loose" electronics and splicing/fixing cables.
Thank you SO much for helping me out with this-
(Oh,BTW now that I've dismantled some of the other things- I think I see how the magnet is supposed to go under the Pups.)
So, should I try to remove the pick-ups from casing or leave as is? |

I'm going to PM you, in the interest of not starting a long discourse on the forum.
