excessive fretbuzz and loose nut, help!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a used fender MIM p-bass. It sounds great. but I'm getting excessive fretbuzz from all the strings at the 1st to 3rd frets as well as when playing open strings. The bridge did need some adjusting and i plan on replaceing it but for now I just raised the action after changing strings. also the neck doesn't appear to be warpped.

also the E string doesn't sit right in the nut and easily pops out. any suggestion on how I could fix either problem would be great, thanks

You could try loosening the trussrod first and see if that helps with the buzz.

When you wound the E string did you let the wounds start at the top of the tuner and push the string down towards the headstock? That way the string break angle should keep it in the nut slot. Hope that helps.

i cut the measured the e string just past the next post and cut it off there so there wasn isn't alot of excess. I was thinking of taking some sandpaper and just sanding out the groove so the string fits better.

doing this will make your string sit a tiny bit lower in the nut, and so isnt going to help with the fretbuzz problem. Did you check what emils suggested? The string should sit at an angle from the nut to the tuning peg - which is done by ensuring the string is wound to the bottom of the peg, not the other way round.

Blood, are you saying that the string is too thick for the nut slot?

Did you try the trussrod?
