Fbass owners: pickup height

Sign in to disble this ad
I realize this thread will be a slow burner, but what the heck, I've got time.

I'm curious to hear how Fbass owners set up their basses in regard to pickup height, specifically the BN models (or any model with wooden pickup covers).

The reason I'm asking this is I have noticed that when playing in the upper register I get that "warbling" tone that you hear people get when their setup is too close to the strings...I really don't think mine is, and I'm having trouble trying to get rid of this sound. I tried lowering the pickups to see if that made a difference but it's still there.

Any tips, advice etc. from anyone is welcome...George maybe?

if youre lowering the pickups and its still there, sometimes a string change will help. changing strings, sometimes just another set thats the same brand will help.

Changing strings was going to be my suggestion - as that sounds more like what your problem is. Have you tried new strings?

I've gone through a few sets of Fbass strings, but the problem has always been there; it's like a chorusy effect when I play higher up on the neck, and all strings are affected. I suspect it may have something to do with the intonation and/or the bridge that was installed, it's a vintage style bridge, not the usual Hipshot B...

The tuner tells me that my intonation is spot-on though, so it's perplexing to say the least. I might try some other brand of strings first, to see if there's any change.
