Fender American Jazz bridge/saddle replacement?

Sign in to disble this ad
So yesterday I showed my Fender American Jazz V to my tech and he told me that he didn't like the way the multi-slotted saddles looked on the bridge because they were angling oddly and said that he would like to replace them with what he described as high mass single slotted saddles.

I'm looking to get some advice from some folks on here on whether or not the multi-slotted saddles should be something of concern and any recommendations for replacement. thanks!

Perhaps post some pictures so we could better render a judgment.

I'll see what I can do when I get home. He made it sound like it was a common issue with multi-channel saddles, but maybe I misunderstood him.

Looks like all that needs to be done is to lower the saddle set screws on one side, so the saddle is parallel with the surface of the bass.

And convert a five-string bass into a four?

His concern (my tech) was with the saddles not being parallel to the direction of the strings so that the strings aren't running through the entire length of the slot.

Honestly, I don't see that as an issue since a vibrating string only needs to contact a single point on the saddle. However, it could cause a very small amount of problems in tuning and string breakage by it not being fully aligned. Have you had any problems with either of those before?

I haven't had any problems with tuning stability or string breakage. I know the old adage is "if it ain't broke don't fix it" so I may just have him do a setup and intonation (and possibly the addition of a thumb rest between the two pickups) and leave the bridge stock for now.
