Fender deluxe V bridge upgrade-18mm spacing

Have one on the way, thinking about a hipshot b-style 18mm bridge to bring the spacing in. Anybody have experience with this? It looks like it may be a direct drop in for the fender mount version.

What's wrong with the bridge that came on it that it needs replacing? I think the factory spacing is 18mm on the fender. Mine sure feels like it.

i found a thread recently with measurements, at its tightest some of the strings can be 18.5, but the outside two end up being 19mm. Lots of ruler science.

I play mostly Spector, would like the jump to be less noticeable on the Fender

austentaciousC,

73jbass is right. Almost all 5-string Fender jazz basses have 18mm spacing from the factory.

I'd recommend checking your existing bridge before replacing it.

Heres the thread:http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=52682

It looks like the best you can do is MAYBE 18.5mm. Im Looking for 18mm solid across the board

That's a 4-string bridge. Almost all Fender 4's are 19mm, but almost all the 5s are 18mm.

Do you have a micrometer, or good ruler? 18mm spacing equates to (18mm) 0r .708" mid-string to mid-string.

As far as it goes, if you intend to get a replacement 18mm bridge, Hipshot (for example) makes the A, B and vintage styles with that spacing.

I'm looking at the a style. I wonder how tight it can get, if its 18mm 708. Adjustable to a bit tighter.

Hipshot A-Style FM-3 for an 18mm drop in replacement.
However, your assumptions about the Fender V being 19mm are incorrect, I'm sorry to contradict you. It's 18mm for sure.

I've been working with this instrument and the Warmoth equivalent for years now, definitely 18. The A style Hipshot will allow something closer to 17.5 however if that floats your boat.

The 5-string A bridge comes in the following spacings:

.787 - 20mm
.750 - 19mm
.728 - 18.5mm
.708 - 18mm
.687 - 17.5mm
.669 - 17mm

The B and Vintage come in 19mm, 18mm and 17mm only.

Pick your poison.

Ok, so here it is:

Fender: 19m-18mm adjustable
Hipshot: 18mm-down?

or

Hipshot: 17.5-up?

would the Fender mount b style 17.5 be too skinny? "knowing" measurements is one thing, im looking for someone who actually has one of these bridges mounted. A thread full of measurements won't mean a thing once ive mounted it and found its too skinny or not much different than the stock fender bridge.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the Hipshot bridges are adjustable. The Schaller roller bridge is, though.

Typically, measurements are taken with the saddles centered,so 18mm plus or minus a bit.

Looks like 17.5 adjusted wide is the answer!

That is MM SR5 spacing. They are all 17.5mm. You will have some extra space on the neck.
