I too have a Geddy with the strings almost right on the frets, the neck is straight as a razor and I use stainless steel strings. To me, it is the ultimate slap sound. Mine just crushes. It rivals a Marcus Miller for tone. Try putting some new stainless strings on there and work on your technique. Tone is 70% you and 30% the gear you use. That is why guys like Marcus, Stanley, Vic etc... sound the way they do no matter what bass they are playing.

I had the chance to meet and listen to Marcus at the NAMM show and he just played whatever bass was put in front of him. Regardless if it was an alder body and rosewood board, it still sounded like Marcus.

With all of that being said, if you don't like your slap tone, try playing around with your setup, strings, amp settings etc... to see what you like. That is the beauty of being an artist.

Good luck!!!!

Great bass by the way!

Peace,
Chris

A pro setup job including new strings can really do wonders. If you are thinking it is the bass and not your technique or EQ or anything else, get a full setup job first, all J-Basses should be great for slapping.

When I had my Geddy, it was a slap monster. New strings and a good setup should do the trick.

most jazz basses should be great for slapping. do you actualy hit the fretboard with your thumb? i saw someone at a gig the other week trying to slap a j bass just over the neck pickup... not a good move klunk klunk klunk.

the geddy lee is my fav bass to slap on besides maybe the musicman but i prefer a jazz bass overall for the avaliable tones on it. also not a big fan of active basses but thats just me. in regards to slap its great and i have my action pretty low. i use rotosound funkmaster nickel roundwounds gauged .30-.90 and its great with good bottom end considering the gauge.
