Question Fender high mass bridge and flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought recently a Fender P-Bass US (with an high mass bridge)
Problem : I'm used to playing with flatwounds strings.
The default Fender E string on the p-bass is a taper string so that it feets perfectly in the high mass saddle.

May I use "standard" flatwounds with this bridge without damaging the saddle (the E string cannelure saddle is very tight). If yes shall I use string thrue body stringing method or top loading ?

May you tell me is taper flats does exist ?

Do I have to change one or several saddles ? the entire bridge ?
please do not answer the entire bass !

Where can I find this hardware (I'm living in europe)

thank you for your answers and all my apologize for my english

The saddles are adjustable, so all you have to do is lower the E string saddle for non-tapered strings. When you change the string gauge, you should get the bass set up anyway. Your bass should have come with allen wrenches for the screws.

I have an 08 Jazz V that I run flats on. I don't run them through the body. The fact that they aren't tapered, you will only get so low. The E string is not the bad as far as sitting up high, but the B string is really up there and the saddle is pretty low. Luckily I'm not interested in ultra low action on the Low B. Also, I am pretty sure that a set of flats are slightly larger than the same gauge rounds. The HMB sting hole on the fenders, not through the body, are pretty tight, especially for the B and on the E. The silk gets a bit torn up.

Thank you for your answers.
It seems that HMB, is far from being the best bridge to mount flatwounds on...
