Fender Jazz bass set up question.

Sign in to disble this ad
I had my MIM deluxe jazz professionally setup with my BadAss II bridge a couple of month ago. I had the tech set it up with a somewhat high action because I played it with a pick in a punk band, but now I am no longer playing with that band and use the jazz bass for slap and finger playing. I realy dont feel like having to spend 20 more bucks to get it set up. I used to do itmyself(but still dont kknow much about how) , but it would take forever for me to get it the way I liked it. I just want to lower the action a bit and take away a bit of string tension.
Would I want to just lower the strings and leave the trussrod, or the other way around or a combination of both? Don't worry about intonation, I got that down.

Any Ideas or suggustion are aprreciated, Thanks!

Go to Fender's website. They have links to bass setup that will get you some good basic ideas on how to get what you want. The basics are the basics. Just adjust to your own personal preferences and you will have it set up the way you want it.
Plus saving some bucks and having the pride of doing your own.
It's really pretty easy.

It's pretty easy to lower the saddles. Just try turning each bridge saddle adjustment a half turn at a time until you get it to where you want it and remembering that there is a crown in the neck and that you need a little more height for the vibration of the lower strings.

The height of the strings will not affect the tension of the strings though. It's the gauge of the strings that will affect the actual tension.

However, you may perceive the feel of the strings to be softer under your fretting fingers if you're not having to press the strings as far before you hit the fret though. That is a function of the height of the action of the bass and it will definitely affect the feel of the strings.

Anywway, you can do it, it's very easy and you're not very likely to mess anything up as long as you adjust things a little bit at a time.

thanks guys, I just got done seting it up under the guide lines off fenders website. It sounds and play awsome now. All I did was lower the strings and take a little bit of the concave out. I also raised the pickups a bit, and it gave me a bit more tone.

Thanks
