I recently took the bushings off of my Fender Jazz Bass to relic them and now when I go to put them back in they wont stick at all. Instead they fall out onto the floor. Has any one else experienced this sort of problem? Solutions? thank you . - Duke
Rickenbacker puts small amounts of scotch tape in the holes so the bushings will stay put, because they have something to "grip" or push against. This will also help if your headstock isn't finished, which means it will swell and shrink more with humidity changes.
If you are good buddies with a luthier ask for five minutes of his time: after you're put the tape in, have your luthier pal install the bushings with one of those tools designed specifically for the procedure (I saw it on StewMac's catalog). They should fit very tightly afterwards.
I got a set of bushing that came with some hipshot tuners that didn't fit 100% snug on my brand new all parts neck. I put them in with some wood glue in the tuner hole and on the bushing using a queue tip. I let it dry over night and it seems to have fixed the problem.
I figured to use wood glue because it won't be impossible to remove the bushing later down the line if I need to.
