Fender Jazz collides with ceiling fan, should I worry?

Sign in to disble this ad
It being a hot July here in Texas (they always are), I've got my ceiling fan in my bedroom cranked up to maximum speed. Now, usually I don't practice bass in my bedroom wearing my strap, but today I did on a lark. When I went to take the bass off later, I unthinkingly raised it high over my head and...WHACK! Headstock into the fan.
After making sure my heart had become dislodged from my throat, I inspected the headstock and found a bit of the wood on the end had been unceremoniously hacked off, but otherwise everything looked a-ok. Still, I'm a bit skittish and wondering if there's any less obvious signs of damage that might come from a hard impact to the neck like that?

Should be ok, I mean, it IS a Fender. "Battle scar from a bar brawl" is a better cover story though...

What I really want to know is how the ceiling fan made out.

If this were a 1964 J bass, I'd be jumping off a cliff...

But 99.9% of fenders... Shiz happens. Like tha man said - tell 'em it happened in a rowdy bar.

I seem to get my bass whacked by the cieling fan every time I practice at my buddies house. It's become the running joke around there. The bass is fine but that fan is starting to get off balanced!

Wow...never thought I would hear a story so similar to a personal experience.

I did the same thing to my 71 many years ago. Took a nice shot and put a nice mark on the headstock.

It has played just fine since then, no problems.

Chalk it up as (reliced, the old fashion way)

Peace,
Robbie

Thanks for the input, guys...I'll just pretend it's now part of the Fender "Road Worn" series.

Oh, and for those wondering, the fan is doing quite well, only wobbles a little bit...the jolt actually made one of the attatched light bulbs start working again, so when the incident happened I not only heard a loud "THONK!" from above, but suddenly bright light came pouring down on me; it was an eerie moment to be sure. I briefly wondered if I'd been biblically smited.

Based on past personal experience, I'd expect the ceiling fan suffered more than the Fender.

I lived in TX for 13 years and had ceiling fans in just about every room of the house, including the kitchen and the garage.

If you really want to witness the definition of the word "smite" when it comes to ceiling fans, try walking through the room holding the tip of a long 2x4 up near the ceiling. Let's just say it's a good way to get rid of a noisy ceiling fan and create an excuse to replace it. Don't ask how I know this.

haha, I was playing a show and got a little crazy. I ended up bashing my Jazz's headstock into the barlight above us. I was afraid to look at the headstock because I was sure with that amount of impact that at the very least a tuning key was gone. Turns out a small hunk of the underside of the stock was all that got damaged! Picked it up, glued it back in and now have a pretty funny/rockin story!!

Yes it was big enough for me to spot laying on the ground while we played!

If you think a bass is bad....

Mind you this is a true story....

My friend was holding his young son in his arms at a relatives house and does the typical hold him up looking down at you.....

Whap!! ceiling fan....thank god on low speed....everyone is fine, so those of you with a bit twisted sense of humor can laugh now...

Even he laughs now when telling the story....

He's a music fan, so when I told him about this thread he told me to say "at least it wasn't a '59 les paul".....

Now if it had been a Gibson Thunderbird, the story might have had a different ending...

my ceiling fan was raging one day & i took off my bass in the exact same manner as you but i hit the heavey 1/4" glass cover & it came crashing down right on top of the old skull. i went down hard, but came up laughing.
