Fender MIM Jazz Neck: Settles-in nicely after a few months?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a new 2007 Fender MIM Jazz, which of course a) has a thin neck and b) has no graphite reinforcement.

When I first got it, it had a lot of relief (measured in mm, not feet...). At first, though I was careful, doing only 1/4 turn per day and letting it settle overnight, the relief kept changing. After going through that for about 6 weeks (gradually less relief change over time), the neck has been quite stable for about a month now, even after temperature and humidity changes.

Has anyone else seen a MIM Jazz neck, purchased new with a "dried-out neck" (fret-sprout), settle-in nicely after a couple of months?

BTW: I filed-down the fret-sprouts.

My 2000 MIM played great off the showroom floor (smaller local dealer), but they also kept the store at a good humidity level, which many megastores and warehouses do not do.

Where did you get it?

Guitar Center, Rockville MD. They had a black one that fell on the floor and broke-off a *huge* chunk of the body; I didn't buy that one.

I searched the local stores and checked mail-order (actually ordered a G&L I sent back). I'm pretty happy with my find (just wanted a 4-banger to slap on to compliment my 6), but it didn't seem to be stored under "optimum conditions" at the store.

I have had nothing but problems with every MIM neck I have seen. My jazz neck is seriously messed up and is constantly changing. I have a friend with a p bass same thing. every time I look at one in a store I see the same thing.

I would personaly steer very clear of them. I changed the neck on mine and its fine now.

As a MIM aficionado, I have seen many many very stable necks, and a few bad apples that spoil it for the whole bunch. I have no problem buying cheap MIM necks sight unseen. I'm even aboot to buy one from a TBer.

It will settle down after a while, Once you get it nice and flat it should stabilize. If not, return it for one that doesn't suck.

my neck is damn stable... doesn't need tweaking whatsoever and my old 5er never needed tweaking either...

The neck on my old MIM needed fairly regular attention, but was wonderful when setting up. I didn't mind the occasional truss rod tweak.

i've owned a MIM deluxe 5 for a couple years and the neck's been absolutely fine. drifts a *tiny* bit between setups like most necks but no issues here.
