Question Fender P bass question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there,

I was changing my strings on the American Standard P bass and noticed that the grommet (G string) on the back of the the bass where you feed the strings is not flush with the body, I thought when the string was put on that it would force it down, but that didnt change anything. Are these metal grommets screwed into the body or are they just pressed in there. Would this cause tuning problems or other problems. I noticed when tuning the G string that it was harder than normal to get it into tune. By the way I changed to flat wound strings.
Thanks for your help

Kenneth

Detune your G string and turn the bass over on a soft surface.
Get a small block of hardwood and place it over the string frrule and tap with a light hammer. If it dosn't go down take the string off and pry it out with something but don't dent or scratch the finish. See whats stopping it from going down or clean the hole out and try again.

Hope this helps.

i'd remove the string completely before tapping...you don't want to go driving the string ferrule into the grommet..

everything else is correct...but again, I wouldn't go prying it out...you will dent the finish if you pry

to get it out, I would remove my bridge and tap it out from the bridge side with a properly-sized blunt-end punch.

Correct I should have added to check and see if the crommet has pulled thru the ferrule. If so it may be difficult to remove the string and prying it out carefully and protecting the body may be the way to go.
