Fender peg hole redrill

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Fender MIJ neck with narrow tuning peg holes and I need to put a set of Schallers from an Fender MIA neck into those holes. What size drill bit do I need to redrill the holes with?

If those came off an MIA bass, or are going on an MIA bass, then yeah, like those. My understanding is there are two peghole widths. I need to know the exact dimension of the larger one.

I'd be interested in learning where one can find these specifications. Anyone?

Shooter's right. The MIJ '62 reissues have tuning posts that are slightly smaller than original MIA stuff. I've swapped tuners on both of my MIJ/CIJ's and they do have to be reamed to open them up. IIRC, the originals were close to 1/2" or 12-13mm since I guess they were metric. So I opened them up to the correct 9/16" by drilling. To help with centering the bit, I ran a piece of tape across the holes and marked the hole centers on the tape. Then I clamped the neck in place on my drill press and wailed away.

You should be warned though that the upper left corner of the G string tuner might peak up above the top edge of the headstock. If it does (and both of mine did) a little file work followed by a touchup with some lacquer over the raw metal is all that was needed.

Wow! Thanks for that.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but have a related question.
Does anyone know who sells tuners that fit in the CIJ
RI P-bass series without drilling? In other words, where can I
get tuners to fit a 70's RI p-bass neck that is CIJ (2005)?
Any help much appreciated. Allparts has not responded.

That's the trouble - These tuners were exclusively Japanese and, AFAIK, these are the only basses they were used on. Why are you changing the tuners anyway? I did it because I'm a nut about the tall stalk tuners (vintage style) and I wanted them instead.

check with the ebay seller named "reliablefender" They part out Fender CIJ instruments and have a revolving stock bass bodies, necks and tuners, mostly reissues.

I bought the neck without tuners, even though I tried to get the seller to
sell me the tuners. You know how these folks are who part basses out...

Anyway, if anyone knows about the allparts.com tuners, I'd love to hear
anything about what fits the CIJ 70's RI p-bass necks.

I, too, want vintage-style tuners, but I would like some that are
"CBS," cause the bass is a '71.
If I have to, I'll drill, but I would like to avoid it. I have some genuine
1969 tuners, not in the best shape, but they could do the job. I sure don't
want to file the G string backing plate, though.

Edit: Reliable fender sold me the neck, but has said that they no longer have tuners to fit, of any kind.
BTW: The CIJ neck is really nice and just as they described it.

Thanks!

Here is what happened when I tried to put '69 p-bass tuners
on a 2005 CIJ "70's RI" p-neck and install it on a '71 p-bass:

70 Pbass+69 tuners+cij neck=match made in??
