Sign in to disble this ad
hello, I have a white jb and I would like to change the pickguard for a tortoise one, I would like to know if pre cbs era models used to have regular tortoise or red tortoise pickguards on white basses.

Thank you!

If I'm not mistaken there was not brown or red tortoise back then, just tortoise. Pick which ever one you like. Looking at pictures of pre cbs fenders they look closer to brown. IMO the red tort looks too red sometimes.

New red looks like pre-CBS tortoise. It also looks like the bound celluloid Gibson and others used on their jazz boxes. That is, if you shine a light through them. They are thick.

Brown tortoise just looks like things that are brown.

Here's my 1963 Precision with the original pickguard...call it what you will. I call it tort. The colors in the photos are pretty accurate.

Pickguardian has nitro pickguards that are exactly like they used back then and the color is accurate. They even cut the correct bevel as the early 60's if you ask for it.
