In the late 90's Fender use to sell what they called genuine replacement necks (and bodies)...I had bought three of them in the past. They had them for the '62 RI Jazz Bass, '57 RI P, and '62 RI P. None of the necks had a model designation on them, just "Fender." What ever happened to these? I want to buy one but can't find anyone who sells these anymore. I also notice they aren't listed on Fenders website anymore. |

| | | | They discontinued them a couple of years ago, and I think you can bet your bottom dollar they won't be back.
They were intended as replacements, but what ended up happening is that a number of upscale Tele and Strat clone makers started buying them up and using them in new guitars they were assembling. These were mostly new "relics". Selling a new product with a Fender name on it when you aren't Fender is a violation of their trademarks. So Fender put an end to it.
Now it's just like the old days, you can get a genuine replacement neck (with decal) only if your neck goes bad under warranty. A dealer has to take photos of your guitar or bass and once Fender okays it, you have to turn in the old neck. |

Thanks for your help. |

Problem is some of them -- like Am. Ser. Jazz necks -- command such high prices that it isn't worth it for me. But some sellers buy new MIM Fenders, and part them out, so you can get a new "custom" Fender, like my P with fretless J neck and Am. Ser. pickup scavenged from my 2004.
You could also try allparts.com and basspartsresource.com.

Thanks for the info! | How much fatter is that neck? Cause I was looking into this, playing a bunch of p-basses, and aside from the nut being wider, the neck didn't feel any chunkier than my Am Std J.

I snatched up an NOS body (genuine replacement that is)
and a lightly used 57 Pbass neck.
They can be found - simply ask around.
I found my neck here.
I paid about 2 bills for it.

| | | | Best Jazz Bass replacement neck Hello,
great thread... learning curve so steep..
Got my hands on a 1969 Jazz Bass.. all original but no paint... err.. sob... with a wrecked neck. Some "luthier" had a go at it badly... and left an overtightened truss rod that didn't correct anything, a slightly twisted neck... that will need levelling re-fretting... name it... a wreck. Can't even think about spending money on fixing this (can this be fixed?) Assuming that I won't find an identical neck (bound pearl blocks) A vintage original replacement sounds the best. I've even thought about a 62's MIJ re-issue... or the odd MIJ 80's jazz neck that every now and then appears on dBay... but the only thought of buying a dog puts me off the idea... any thoughts, experiences, offers... will be welcome (as it's this thread)
And yes... the replacement ideally will have to be Fender... that's the deal.
Will I have any problems fitting these 80's or contemporary 62's RI MIJ necks on a 1969 MIA body??
