Fender USA string through?

Sign in to disble this ad
SO I've wanted to string my bass through the body for a while now, but most of the bridges I've seen are fairly large/etc, and I like the "vintage" (by comparasin) look that the new american fender bridges have. What I was wondering was is there aa similar brand that I could get that might be less than the $200 (cdn) they seem to sell for? I don't imagine they are sold privately often as people seem to like hanging onto their original parts for some crazy reason.

Probly a stupid request, but oh well... I want to string through.

Have you tried contacting Fender? They may sell their bridges individually.

WOw... I feel like a bit of a moron. I'd downloaded their price list about a year ago and they were seriously 200 bucks (cdn). Tried a shop in edmonton about 3 months later and was offered a "deal" at 180 plus the bits to install in the back of the bass.

THanks for the help with a silly question though!

I once converted a stock bridge to string through by drilling through it on a drill press and installing ferrules on the back of the body.

It's exacting work to do a clean job and to get the ferrule holes to line up properly on the back, so it's not something to attempt without proper tools and experience. And you need to make sure the bridge can be modified this way first. I'd need a close up look at it first.

To get someone to do it for you in a shop could cost as much as the $200 Canadian you'd pay for a replacement bridge, but with the replacement there's still a lot of work to be done what with drilling through the body exactly and drilling larger holes for the ferrules.

Take a look at the Stewart McDonald website to see what they might have that'll fit. I haven't looked at their catalogue for some time so I'm not sure.

If you're not too concerned about keeping the really vintage look, Carvin has their version of a hipshot bridge for $46.99 plus $8 for ferrules (US) Figure in the difference in the dollar and shipping and handling and you should be under $100 Canadian. I have the Carvin string through bridge on one bass and i really like it.

Also, take a look at the Steamco website. They're in Winnipeg and keep adding to their catalogue. They may have something.

Thanks,

I was going to check again to see what labor would be on getting a shop to do it... I don't think it was too much, but the 200 i was looking at at the time was definately before instalation. No way I'd even consider attempting this, I have no tools, and less experience.

I'l definately take a look at the carvin.
