File for Fret Ends?

Sign in to disble this ad
I tracked down a really nice MTD Kingston that I once owned and I will be taking it home in about two weeks. It is great except for some sharp fret ends. I think I can get this myself, what size file should I use?

I use a lawnmower blade file. Dan Erlewine had an article in Bass Player a few years back and that's what he recommended. It has worked finr for me.

I like it because part of it is smooth, so it is easier to use without gouging in where you don't want to

^ I now prefer to use this file. It offers more control with lesser chance of damaging the finish than my 3 corner file. IMO, it s worth every cent paid.

I ended up getting a set of small files from Home Depot. I did a pretty good job of smoothing out the frets, but I did get a bit of finish. The bass feels better, but Roger Sadowsky's day job is very safe!

I don't think I will ever do extensive file work, but it was nice trying it out of an inexpensive bass like my Kingston.
