Filing your nuts

Filing Nuts the inexpensive way....These are torch tip cleaners that I picked up from my local Welding Supply store for about 6 bucks. I used them to file my 4 string Squire Nut to accomadate B-E-A-D gauge strings. It worked out perfectly and took about 10 careful minutes.

And talk crap about squire all you want. That Squire Vintage 4 string that just came out is awesome! A well made bass with an outstanding flat low action neck for only 300 dollars. The only thing I changed on it was the bridge and the strings.

You only widened it right? Did it cause more fret rattle by adding larger gauge strings to the stock slot depth relative they're wider oscillations (from the stock EADG strings)? Did you have to raise the saddles? Were you able to intonate the new "B" string (did you have enough room to screw the saddle back far enough)? Hows it sound - what you expected?

I actually widened and deepened the D-A-G slots just a hair. Because of The significant gauge difference between the typical E and B string,I had to widen and deepen the E slot considerably. I went with the lightest B string gauge possible which was the Diadarrio super light gauge .125. To my suprise, I did not get B. String Flop. The B was tight just like the remaining three. Because the standard string settings were so tight, I was actually able to lower my saddles quite a bit lower than If I had detuned the Standard EADG to BEAD. My experience with Detuning EADG to BEAD was nothing but floppiness. All that floppiness caused me to have to raise my action about 3 miles off the fret board to prevent buzz. Intonation of all strings was no problem.

The only downside is that the thicker and tighter strings might be harder to pluck. And also you're missing the high pluck of the G string. It was what I expected though;Playability of a 4 string but the sound of a 5.
