filling old tuner holes

Sign in to disble this ad
A friend of mine bought a used P-bass. The previous owner replaced the hardware with black tuners and a black Hipshot bridge. Apparently, the drilling done on the headstock was sloppy, and the new holes on the "D" tuner were too close to the old ones. The "D" tuner has now come loose as the two adjacent holes have become one. Can this be filled with plastic wood or some other compound and redrilled properly, or are there any other remedies that can be suggested? Any ideas are welcome.

Fill it with wood - more surgical, but more stalwart in the end.

Yes, use wood. Drill a larger(large enough to take out both of the old ones), CLEAN new hole, plug it completely w/the same wood as the neck/headstock, then drill a proper new hole. Make sure to use a drill press- a hand drill will wander & you won't get a very nice hole- also clamp it all down securely, for the same reason. You want as nice a hole as possible so the plug fits tightly. Of course, glue the plug in as well.
