Fingernail polish for dings on a Ric? Help please.

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought my Ric second hand about a month ago. It has the usual wear for a used bass (made in 1998). There are 3 dings that are quite bad, they are small, but they go right to the wood.

I have been thinking for a while about what to use to cover these up. Today, a friend of mine reccomended using fingernail polish. Would this harm the finish of the Ric (JetGlo) if I got it on anything but the dings? I think it would look a lot better than the dings, even if it doesn't match the finish perfectly, the dings will be less noticable from a distance.

Thanks

I used some on my Carvin. It's hard to find deep purple nail polish. It beats having all eyes spot the imperfections at 1st glance.

Am I the only person that loves all the dings on his basses? Like scars on a warrior's face...

Just my opinion though. ;>

The paint job on your bass is a complex beast made up of eleven layers, so before you take your Ric down to the nail parlour, check out the wisdom / post a question at the Ric forum:

You can bet that if there's a preferred method of doing it, the info will be in there somewhere. It's always my first port of call for any Ric-specific queries. Very friendly sort of a place, and what they don't know ain't worth knowing!

Don't do it!!

Ric uses conversion varnish, which is very durable, but unforgiving of solvents like those in nail polish.

The best thing you can do in my opinion is just use a black sharpie or similar magic marker to color the exposed wood black. It'll blend right in. I have a bit of marker on my headstock, and you really can't tell unless you are right on top of it.
