| It's not "one of those stupid disclaimers" at all, it's a very real danger with some instruments.
However, it applies only to nitrocellulose lacquer finishes. Some polymers attack nitro and turn it gummy and/or discolor it, often within just a few hours of contact. Many people who have bought expensive replica or reissue guitars finished with nitro have had the finish ruined by contact with a rubber stand, strap, or hanger, or even plastic seat cover. Some users wrap the contact areas of their stands or hangers with cotton cloth to avoid this problem.
It is highly unlikely that your Ibanez is finished with nitro lacquer, it is more likely polyester or polyurethane. But if you want to be sure, wet a Q-tip with acetone and dab it on a hidden area of the finish, such as under a pickguard. If it is nitro, the finish will turn cloudy and get sticky very quickly. |
