Finish issue...

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a warwick yesterday, for a very good price. Turns out the previous owner sanded off the paint, so now its exposed wood. In addition as you can see the stain on the neck is completely darker and shinier than the body...WHAT CAN I DO?
I would love to stain it or somehow darken the body to the same color...at the very least, I need to treat the wood...Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks for any help

PS couldnt be happier with the tone and sound of the bass itself...Just a bit cosmetically off

Tung oil

I have refinished numerous custom basses with Tung oil.

The hardest part will be removing all the metal and magnets. I suppose you could tape off the pups and bridge, but I have never tried this.

Easy to apply, hand rubbed with a soft cotton cloth. 6-12 coats depending on the wood and your aesthetic goals.

It will protect your wood, you can leave it glossy or steel wool the last coat for a duller finish. Easy to work with and looks good,

inexpensive.

Or find a pro and spend a little cash.

You can try it on a test patch.

I'd recommend tearing the thing down completely, then it'll be easy to do a test patch in the neck pocket and see what you think. And you won't have to worry about getting the Tung oil on the electronics or the neck.

Easy to refin, but definitely remove the neck and electronics before doing the work. You will save time and headaches by doing this.

the Oil I have used has a subtle honey tone to it. It's not so much that it makes it darker, as that it brings out the grain and natural color of the wood.

Be sure an post pics when you are done.

Tung oil is very sticky, when you're working with it. I'd recommend you get some disposable vinyl gloves. It's murder getting it off your skin. Also, the cloth you use will be history, when you're done, so use something disposable, as well - an old t-shirt, cut in several pieces seems to work the best. If you want it substantially darker, you might need to stain it, first. I'd recommend taking the instrument to the hardware store, so you can compare the neck color to the many different stains. Also check the directions on the stain. If I remember correctly, you need to steel wool it, after it dries. Also, another pair of gloves, for staining.

The hardware store should have all of this stuff. hrb
