Finished vs unfinished neck sound

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

Will a neck with no finish loose some brightness and snap once it gets some nitrocellulose coats?

I just changed the neck on my P-Bass. Wasn't satisfied with the feel of the USACG one I had and also didn't like the fact it wasn't period correct as far as specs goes. Ordered a new one from Musikraft and installed it before having it finished to see if I liked the way it sounded on the P body.

From the go, the feel is awesome, sustain is excellent but I find it very bright and snappy even if it's rosewood compared to the USACG one.

So I was wondering if some finishing coats would dampen or tame that to an extent.

Thanks!

What, on the back of the neck?

No, it will not affect the sound in the slightest, in the same way that the colour of an instrument won't affect the voltage output of the pickups.

I do not believe any human being could hear a difference.

The tone difference you hear is due to the different neck wood and the tightness of the neck's mounting to the body. Finish won't affect this.

I doubt an oscilloscope would be able to detect the difference.

No change in tone to expect.
Maybe if it was a fretless and we were talking about the fingerboard side.
