First Bass build, 5 string Gecko

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I'm going to be starting a build on my first 5 string. I've been playing 4 strings for about 6 years, and I finally decided to go to a 5.

Anywho, I'm thinking of building a Gecko 5, Probably medium.

I'm thinking of Going with Mahogany for the body, with a flame maple laminate.

I'm not quite sure what to do for the neck, but I know I want fret-less. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking of Bartolini 59J1's for the darker, mellow sound.
For strings, I want to go with Flatwounds, but I'm unsure of the brand.

Do the body wood and pickups work well together? How are flatwounds on fretless basses?

Sorry 'bout all the questions, I just want to make sure I get a bass with pickups that match the wood for a more warm, bluesy sound.

For fretless Id reccomend ebony fretboard. Will wear much better then rosewood, not show as much wear with roundwounds. Maple neck with ebony board. Id also suggest useing the new graphite rather then steel reinforced necks since they dont weigh as much and thus wont be as prone to neck dive. Also plan to have a luthier do fret leveling etc on the neck before you install it. Apparently warmouth doesnt do much in the way of fretwork other then putting them in from what Ive been reading lately. So fret leveliing will prob be needed for best playability.
