First fret rattle

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there,

I just picked up a japanese P bass copy. The truss rod was rattling so I took the neck off and tightened it up. I've never taken a neck off before, so this could be the root of my problem. When I put the neck back on, it rattles on the first fret, as though it is higher there than anywhere else. Is this to do with how I put the neck back on? How is the best way of going about doing this?

Cheers,
Shaun

Sorta starting to throw screw drivers around the room. Trying to fix this sh** can be very stressful.

The only thing I can think of (obviously, I cant see/touch the bass) is that either you turned the trussrod the wrong way & introduced a little back-bow, or the neck-angle is different than before.

Usually, first-fret rattle (rattles when open string is plucked) is due to a low nut slot. :-/

Just so I'm clear, it's string rattle you hear now & not a rattle 'inside' the neck, right?

Definitely the string rattling against the fret. The E string rattles at the first fret, the A seems to rattle on a few and the D and G haven't been strung up yet. I feel like it may be neck angle

No, it's not neck angle!

You need to have this strung up to pitch! No surprise you've got rattles, with the two higher tension strings off your bass.

Cheers for that. How stupid of me. Normally I would have done this but for some reason I've spent all day trying to fix it while testing it with one string...
