Fitting a new neck

Sign in to disble this ad
Morning,
Ive bought a fretless mightly mite neck for a P bass, I searched the forums but I couldnt find anything relevent.

The neck is about 3mm longer then my original neck.
Do I need to take it into a bass shop for them to fit the neck or is it something I can do myself???

Its fits in the pocket snugg, with a little left right action, do I put something in the neck pocket to make it not move at all before I fix it in place? should I do this before I drill the holes?? is there an easy way to drill the holes to make sure its 100% straight????

thanks,.

If there is enough thread left on the saddle screws, all you need to do is move the saddles 3 mm nearer the pickups(?).

Does the MM neck have a fingerboard extension?

Even so, 3mm is not really anything to worry about. It could just be the headstock. If not, most bass bridges have plenty of travel to compensate.

no its a solid piece no extended top layer.

Ive got a BAII bridge so Ill keep playing with it untill its in tune open and 12th fret.

Any advice on the neck pocket?? im sure drilling it and fitting it will be easy enough, but what im worried about is the excess play, do I need to put tape in the pocket to pad it out like the first fenders sometimes had? or will 4 screws hold it fine??

I compaired the size from nut to butt.

Again, it doesn't matter, as long as your saddles on the bridge still have space to adjust.

Use two strings (the cotton kind) to align your neck in the pocket by placing them where the E and G strings will go. clamp it down, then use screws (or any sharp, round object) to mark the neck for drilling.

Just screw the neck on, adjust the setup to taste and play it. There's no big secret in replacing an OEM neck.
