Fix for Stiff Truss Rod?

Sign in to disble this ad
One of my basses has a stiff truss rod. It works but it feels really stiff. Is there a fix for this problem?

If it stays that way longer than 4 hours, call your physician.

Can you elaborate? I've never heard a truss rod described as "stiff" and needing to be fixed...

Is the nut difficult to turn? Is the neck too flat or two bowed, and adjustment don't affect it? Maybe characterize the problem in terms of how it is impacting your playing.

First of all, I would remove the truss rod nut, apply a dab of lithium or similar grease and put it back on. Sometimes that's all you need. Also necks with reinforcement will feel like the rod is stiff because of well the reinforcements. I also loosen all the strings when I turned the rod because there is no point to fight all that tension.

Major +1 here...it's amazing what a little lube on the adjustment nut can do for a truss rod. I would also definitely clean the threads on the rod and nut with a Q-Tip and some isopropyl alcohol before you put on the lube. I use 3 in 1 oil to lube TR nuts, but the lithium grease will probably last longer. Make sure to keep all solvents and lube away from the wood/finish!

You can also press on the back of the neck towards the strings as you tighten the rod to help it do its job better (you are basically pushing out some of the upbow by doing this during the adjustment so that the rod doesn't have to hold the neck in position and push out the upbow).

OK, now that I've blabbed a bunch, what do you mean by a stiff truss rod? lethargytartare poses several good questions.

Yeah, the nut is difficult to turn. I'll apply a little lube and see what happens.

I applied a little silicon lube and the truss rod is much easier to turn!
