Fixing my bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a Dean 2A ML Metalman a while ago, without trying it just ordered it (big mistake).
http://www.deanguitars.com/home.php
So anyway i want to fix it up and make it play better. First thing I wanted to know was how to lower the action properly (excuse my ignorance), got the allan key that comes with the bass and screwed the cylindar things on the bridge that the strings sit on. It didn't do much, so is there a proper way to do it?

I was also looking at replacing the pups, I was thinking of putting maybe one EMG in and replace the neck pup, would a normal EMG fit into the hole, the dean one's are quite large so I'm not too sure if it would fit.

Final question, Is it worth it?

G'Day Cairns...welcome to Talkbass...

you should look at going through the whole setup routine...

first, set the relief (trussrod adjustment)...

then set the action (allen keys to raise or lower the bridge saddles [those "cylinder things"])

then set the intonation (move the saddles back or forward to get the fretted notes in tune with the open string tuning)

I'd suggest you do your homework and look at some of the sticky posts at the beginning of this forum...

+1

And I'm always in favor of taking it to a person who's experienced doing setup for a first time setup. Most techs, if they have time, will even show you what they're doing while they're doing it, IME.

I fixed the truss rod and it already plays a lot better, but I'm still not getting the sound I want.
